Fisheries Science Intern

Part-Time, Immediate Start

About us

At OnDeck, we're committed to revolutionizing fisheries management and conservation around the world. We are doing this through making fisheries monitoring accessible with artificial intelligence: reducing compliance costs for fishers while enabling better insight for fisheries management and seafood companies.

Facing environmental and economic devastation from climate pressure and overfishing, regulators are rushing to massively scale up fisheries monitoring. Current monitoring strategies rely on manual video review, and are thus slow, prohibitively expensive, and impossible to scale to meet the growing demand. OnDeck’s software uses AI to extract crucial information from huge volumes of on-vessel video and location data, enabling communities to make timely and affordable management decisions for compliance and science.

The impact of our work has been heralded by awards from National Geographic, the Environmental Defense Fund, the Sustainable Ocean Alliance, the Ocean Impact Organization and many more. We are currently leading a $3.5M Canada Ocean Supercluster Project to commercialize AI for fisheries alongside Indigenous communities, commercial fishermen, sustainable seafood certifiers, NGOs, and more.

Position Overview

As a Fisheries Science Intern at OnDeck Fisheries AI, you will have the opportunity to work at the intersection of fisheries science and technology. This internship is designed for fisheries students who are passionate about contributing to the sustainable management of aquatic ecosystems through innovative AI solutions.

What you'll be doing

  • Data Labeling: You will be responsible for labeling and annotating fisheries-related data sets, including images, videos, and sensor data. This task is crucial for training machine learning models used in fisheries monitoring and assessment.

  • Scientific Research, Reporting, and Analysis: Alongside data labeling, a significant part of your role involves conducting scientific research, reporting, and analysis on various aspects of fishing activity. This includes analyzing data from the videos you are labeling and leveraging your domain-specific knowledge to provide insights.

  • Quality Control: Ensure the accuracy and quality of labeled data by conducting regular checks and validations. Collaborate with the data science team to refine labeling guidelines.

  • Documentation: Maintain clear and comprehensive documentation of the labeling process, guidelines, and any issues or challenges encountered.

  • Collaboration: Collaborate with other interns, and with our team of fisheries experts, Software Engineers, Machine Learning Engineers, and business analysts to exchange knowledge and insights. Participate in team meetings to discuss project progress and share ideas.

  • Feedback Integration: Provide feedback on the labeling process, suggesting improvements and optimizations to enhance efficiency and accuracy.

Qualifications

  • A student at a Canadian post-secondary institution

  • Either:

    • Currently enrolled in a fisheries science, marine biology, or related program, or have experience as a fisheries observer, or

    • Experience with some or all of: building web-based interactive applications, backend development, frontend development, cloud development, and CI/CD of cloud solutions.

  • Strong interest in fisheries management and technology.

  • Attention to detail and ability to maintain data accuracy.

  • Good organizational and documentation skills.

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
